CHAPTER TEN

This wasn’t what he’d come upstairs to do, but Lord help him he couldn’t keep from kissing her again. Brandon drew Megan to him, deepening the kiss.

With a soft moan, she curled her arms around his neck, threading her fingers through his hair. She opened to him, giving him access to the sweetness of her mouth.

Their tongues met, tangling in a sensual dance that had desire licking at his body in white hot flames. Any hotter and the fly of his jeans and everything straining against it was going to spontaneously combust. He knew he had to pull back to regain some measure of self-control.

Only it was Megan who ended their kiss, muttering against his mouth, “Definitely better than Digger’s kisses.”

“I want you.” The huskily whispered words had her wide-eyed gaze snapping up to meet his. “I thought kissing you would be enough, but it seems I’m a greedy man, darlin’. I find myself wanting all of you.” He caught her face between his hands, caressing her flushed cheeks with his thumbs. “The choice is yours, Megan. Tell me to go and I will. Tell me you want me, too, and I’m gonna make love to you.”

She turned away with a gasp. “I can’t.”

Couldn’t what? Tell him to leave or tell him that she wanted him? Releasing her, he forced his hands to remain at his sides, resisting the urge to touch her. Unsure of what it was she wanted from him, he said with forced calm, “Do you want me to leave?”

“No,” she said in a choked sob.

She was speaking the words, but her actions said something completely different. “Megan,” he said softly, “If I’ve pushed you for something you’re not ready for...”

She spun around, tears streaming down her cheeks. “You didn’t push me. I want to be with you.”

Yeah, the tears were a dead giveaway of that, he thought wryly. The glistening streaks had his gut twisting, knowing that he had done this to her. Maybe she needed more than the undeniable passion that burned between them. Maybe she needed sweet words and wooing, something he’d never been good at. But for her, he’d willingly put himself out there.

“Darlin’, you’re too pretty for tears,” he said as he gently brushed a tear from her cheek.

“Don’t say that,” she said on a sob, more tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m not pretty. I’m flawed.”

This wasn’t going well at all. “Says who?” he demanded, sensing that these weren’t her words, but someone else’s.

Frowning, she admitted softly, “My ex.”

“You were married?”

She shook her head. “Ex-boyfriend.”

“Well, your ex-boyfriend was an ass. A blind ass at that if he tried to make you think you’re anything but perfect.” He smiled past his anger. “Darlin’, any man in his right mind is gonna count himself lucky to catch your eye.”

She closed her eyes as if she thought doing so would block out his heartfelt words.

“Talk to me, Megan,” he coaxed gently. “Tell me why you’re letting this guy’s hurtful lies to get into your head.
